Program notes provided by the composer:
Overture to a Comic Opera was written in 1968, at a time when I was composing other similar ‘light music’ pieces in the hope of a BBC broadcast (happily realised!). It is in straightforward Sonata Form, featuring a short introduction followed by the two main themes. There is much use of imitative counterpoint, withthe second theme played against itself at half speed, and a central ‘development’ section comprising a short, if rather elaborate, fugal treatment of the initial intro. Lasting only a few minutes, its brisk, compact structure, with a single tempo throughout, makes it unique among my compositions, and one with whichI amparticularly pleased – especially as I have found, in the intervening years, no reason to make any alterations!
